New York, 24 July 2018 - The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Pramila Patten, and the Chair of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee), Ms. Dalia Leinarte, welcome the signing of a Framework of Cooperation between the CEDAW Committee and her Office. “With this framework of cooperation, a first between a Security Council-mandated body and a human rights mechanism, the CEDAW Committee and my Office affirm our common commitment to promote and protect the rights of women and girls affected by conflict-related sexual violence, a human rights violation deeply rooted in gender discrimination.

This year’s GRID – Global Report on Internal Displacement, presents data on internal displacement for 2017. Results show that the number of new internal displacements caused both by conflict and disasters reached 30.6 million. Those associated with conflict and violence almost doubled, from 6.9 million in 2016 to 11.8 million in 2017.

Three-in-five babies, mostly born in low- and middle-income countries, are not breastfed within the first hour of life, placing them at higher risk of death and disease, according to a new United Nations report launched on Tuesday.
“When it comes to the start of breastfeeding, timing is everything,” said Henrietta Fore, the UN Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) Executive Director, on the eve of World Breastfeeding Week.
