Cold weather increases health risks for refugees and migrants in Serbia and other countries in the Region

WHO/Violeta Egic - Staff from the WHO Country Office in Serbia visit the barracks near the Belgrade central station, where around 1200 refugees and migrants currently live
As cold temperatures continue across the WHO European Region, conditions worsen for those in the most vulnerable situations, including refugees and migrants stranded in countries. When refugees and migrants sleep outdoors or in cold shelters at temperatures below 16 °C, they are prone to hypothermia, frostbite and other poor health conditions. Their risk increases if they lack proper clothing, food and medical care. The elderly, children, people with health problems and people who abuse alcohol are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of cold weather.

What can countries expect during the 2016–2017 influenza season?
Извор: Светска здравствена организација - 13.01.2017
Early influenza activity in the European Region mainly affecting the elderly
This winter, influenza activity in the Region increased earlier than in recent years. Influenza A(H3N2) virus represents about 98% of influenza A viruses detected and typed. Health providers should therefore preferentially suspect and treat severe influenza in the elderly, and should consider the use of influenza-specific antiviral medicines even in patients who have been vaccinated. The distribution of viruses may change over the course of a winter, and so it is currently unclear whether or not the predominant virus will remain the same.
Pooled analysis of data from 19 European Union/European Economic Area countries or regions reporting to the European Monitoring of Excess Mortality for Public Health project indicates that excess all-cause mortality seems to have been increasing among the elderly in recent weeks, notably in France and Portugal.

The UN European coalition on health is a coordination mechanism focusing on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 – to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages – in the pan-European Region, and of the health-related targets present in other SDGs.
The kick-off meeting of the coalition, which is led by WHO/Europe, took place on 10 November 2016. Participants discussed the added value of joint action and identified a list of actions with the highest potential. After establishing criteria for setting priorities, they agreed on the following 4 workstreams:
Tobacco Control Playbook helps policy-makers counter aggressive tobacco industry tactics
Извор: Светска здравствена организација - 12.01.2017
Tobacco is an extraordinary problem requiring extraordinary action. The WHO European Region has made significant progress in tobacco control in recent decades, including through the adoption of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and the development of a roadmap of actions that was signed by health ministers of the Region in 2015. Despite these commitments and this progress, tobacco control remains difficult and complex.
The tobacco industry and its allies have consistently opposed effective tobacco control measures, and their strategies and efforts to subvert the policy process have become even more determined, focused, misleading, aggressive and sophisticated.

As icy weather grips Europe, WHO offers reminders about measures to reduce health risks from exposure to cold
Извор: Светска здравствена организација - 11.01.2017
WHO
Recently, much of the WHO European Region has been hit by cold, icy weather. Deaths due to the cold have been reported in several countries. Exposure to cold weather, whether indoors or outside, can cause a range of adverse health effects, from mild symptoms to serious or life-threatening health outcomes. Extremely cold weather increases mortality and poses a high health risk to many, particularly those in vulnerable situations.
Those most vulnerable during cold spells include elderly people, infants, children and teenagers, and people who have chronic diseases or physical or mental limitations. People taking certain medications or those who are malnourished are also at greater risk of negative cold-related health outcomes. Refugees and migrants can also be especially vulnerable.
